If you want to be more productive in life, start doing these 8 things every morning

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably found yourself wishing that there were more hours in a day.

With the hustle and bustle of modern life, juggling work, family, and personal time can be quite the challenge.

We all aim to be productive, to get things done efficiently and successfully, but sometimes it feels like we’re running on a hamster wheel, constantly busy but not making any real progress.

What if I told you that by tweaking your morning routine slightly, you could drastically increase your productivity? Intriguing, right?

This article will guide you through eight simple practices to incorporate into your morning routine that can help you seize the day and be more productive in life.

Let’s dive in.

1. Wake Up Early

Oh yes, the classic advice that you’ve probably heard a thousand times before, yet it is the cornerstone of a productive morning. And for a good reason!

Waking up early gives you a head start on the day. It offers quiet, uninterrupted time where you can focus on your tasks without distractions. It’s like having a secret weapon that allows you to tackle your to-do list while the rest of the world is still snoozing.

Now, I can already hear the night owls protesting, “But I’m not a morning person!”

Well, neither were many successful people before they realized the value of an early start. It’s not about forcing yourself into becoming a morning person, but gradually adjusting your sleep schedule and finding that sweet spot where you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to conquer the day.

So set that alarm clock a bit earlier than usual and resist hitting that tempting snooze button.

As Benjamin Franklin famously said, “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” If it worked for one of the most influential figures in history, it’s definitely worth giving it a shot!

2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

This point might seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many of us start our day dehydrated.

After a long night of sleep, your body is craving fluids to kickstart its systems. I’m talking about good old H2O.

Coffee lovers, I feel you! My morning doesn’t feel complete without that steamy mug of java either.

But before we get to our caffeine fix, drinking a glass (or two) of water first thing in the morning can work wonders for our productivity.

Water fires up your metabolism, hydrates you, helps your body flush out toxins, and gives your brain the much-needed fuel to function effectively.

Ever since I started downing a glass of lemon water each morning, I’ve noticed an improvement in my energy levels and concentration.

Plus, it’s a refreshing way to wake up!

3. Get Moving

There’s no sugarcoating this one – you need to move your body in the mornings. And yes, I’m talking about exercise.

Trust me, I understand the struggle. The idea of getting up from your cozy bed to sweat and pant often feels like a punishment rather than a productive start to your day. But hear me out.

Exercise, even in the simplest forms like stretching or a quick walk around the block, can significantly boost your energy levels and mood. It gets your blood flowing and sends oxygen to your brain, enhancing your cognitive abilities and overall focus.

From personal experience, the days I push through the initial resistance and get my body moving are the days I feel more alert, creative, and ready to tackle whatever comes my way.

You don’t have to run a marathon or do an intense HIIT workout (unless you want to, of course). Find a form of exercise that you enjoy so it doesn’t feel like a chore. For me, it’s yoga. The gentle stretching and deep breathing sets a calm and centered tone for my day.

4. Embrace the Silence

In a world that constantly buzzes with noise and distractions, this might seem counterintuitive: start your day with silence. Yes, you read that right.

As an early riser, one of the most beautiful parts of the morning is the stillness it offers, the serenity before the storm. It’s a perfect time to sit in silence and just be.

Silence has immense power. It allows your mind to settle, reduces stress, and increases your ability to concentrate. In the quiet of the morning, you’re able to hear your thoughts more clearly, plan your day effectively, and set a peaceful tone for the rest of your day.

Incorporating silent moments into my morning routine was a game-changer for me. I started with just five minutes of sitting quietly with my cup of tea before the rest of my household woke up. It gradually became a cherished ritual that left me feeling more grounded and prepared for the day ahead.

Tomorrow morning, instead of reaching for your phone or turning on the TV first thing, try embracing the silence. Enjoy these precious moments of peace before stepping into the hustle and bustle of your day. You might be surprised by how this quiet start can boost your productivity throughout the day.

5. Nourish Your Body

“You are what you eat.” We’ve all heard this saying, but have you ever stopped to think about how what you eat in the morning affects your productivity during the day?

Breakfast is often hailed as the most important meal of the day and for good reason. It sets the tone for your eating patterns and energy levels throughout the day.

Personally, I used to be someone who skipped breakfast regularly, substituting it for an extra large coffee. But, I noticed that by midday, my energy levels would plummet, and I’d find it hard to focus. Once I made a conscious decision to start my day with a balanced breakfast, I saw a massive improvement in my productivity and mood.

A healthy breakfast doesn’t have to be a grand affair. It could be as simple as a bowl of oatmeal with berries, a smoothie, or even just a piece of fruit and some nuts on busy days. The goal is to provide your body (and brain) with the fuel it needs to function optimally.

6. Cut Down on Screen Time

Alright, let’s get brutally honest here: How many of us are guilty of reaching for our phones the moment we open our eyes in the morning? I know I was. It’s so easy to get sucked into the vortex of emails, social media updates, and news first thing in the morning. But let’s face it, starting your day with screen time is a productivity killer.

The minute you start scrolling through your phone, you’re subconsciously setting a reactive tone for your day. You’re allowing external factors to dictate your mood and focus. Plus, it’s easy to lose track of time and before you know it, half your morning is gone.

Breaking up with my phone in the mornings was one of the toughest yet most rewarding changes I made. Now, instead of waking up to the glare of my screen, I start my day proactively – focusing on my goals and setting my intentions for the day. It gave me control over my mornings and significantly improved my productivity.

For one week, resist the urge to check your phone first thing in the morning. Replace that habit with one of the other practices we’ve discussed here. Trust me, your emails and social media updates can wait. Give this precious time to yourself and see how it transforms your productivity.

7. Practice Gratitude

As Oprah Winfrey once said, “Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.”

This wisdom applies beautifully to our mornings. Starting the day with an attitude of gratitude is a powerful way to set a positive and productive tone for the day.

Practicing gratitude doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. It can be as simple as jotting down three things you’re grateful for in a journal each morning or just taking a moment to silently acknowledge them.

The act of recognizing your blessings can dramatically shift your perspective, helping you approach the day with positivity and energy.

I started my own gratitude practice about a year ago, and it’s been transformative. On days when I wake up feeling stressed or overwhelmed, taking a few minutes to reflect on the good in my life helps me regain focus and motivation.

8. Plan Your Day

I’ve saved one of the best for last – planning your day. This is an absolute game-changer when it comes to boosting productivity.

By laying out your tasks and goals each morning, you create a roadmap for your day, which can help you stay focused and efficient.

I’ll be honest, I used to be the queen of winging it, believing that flexibility was the key to a stress-free day.

But more often than not, I ended up feeling overwhelmed and pulled in a hundred different directions.

Once I started taking a few minutes each morning to plan out my day, my productivity skyrocketed.

Here’s how you can do it: Grab a notebook or planner and jot down the tasks you need to accomplish. Prioritize them based on their importance and deadlines. Don’t forget to include breaks and some personal time.

A productive day is not about cramming as much as possible into your schedule but about working smarter.

Conclusion

And there you have it: eight simple yet powerful habits to kickstart your mornings and set the stage for a productive day. Remember, productivity doesn’t mean doing more and more in less time. It’s about doing what matters most with efficiency and purpose. It’s about taking control of your time rather than letting it control you.

Incorporating these practices into your morning routine won’t magically make you a productivity guru overnight. It might even feel a bit challenging at first. But stick with it, tweak it as needed, and find what works best for you. As you make these habits a part of your morning routine, you’ll start noticing improvements in your energy levels, focus, and overall productivity.

As the famous saying goes, “The secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine.” So let’s make those mornings count! Here’s to being more productive and achieving our goals, one morning at a time.
