In September 2023 I headed towards the very middle of Iceland to finally see the newly built Highland Base. The wooden facade of the modern hotel, with its sharp edges and clean lines, stood in striking contrast to the rugged landscape. Yet, thanks to its natural materials and earthy tones, it blended harmoniously with the surrounding hills, almost as if it had always belonged there.
During my stay, I joined a guided glacier tour, an unforgettable adventure through a frozen world of shimmering ice and deep crevasses. To my delight, I also experienced the season’s first snowfall?delicate flakes swirling through the crisp mountain air, transforming the highland scenery into a pristine winter wonderland. It felt like stepping into another realm, where nature’s raw beauty and the warmth of the Highland Base created a memorable and deeply enriching experience.
